I have a Garmin 255WT and saw the 1300LMT advertised as basically the replacement for it with free lifetime map upgrades (although I'll bet that in a couple of years, they'll find some excuse to not be able to upgrade the maps and we'll have to buy another unit). To be fair, this unit maintains the ease of use and efficiency of the older unit. It doesn't fail to efficiently get you where you need to be with intuitive and clean interface screens. It is much more intuitive and has clearer interfaces than its Magellan counterpart, which I also tried and ran next to this. The frustrating part is that Garmin has made a bunch of small trade-offs that are lesser examples of its predecessor. Examples are: the formerly all black case now has a bright aluminum bezel that reflects sunlight into your eyes; the human sounding female voice is replaced by a less human sounding, more garbled voice; the standard 3d screens have speed and arrival time fields that are unnecessarily larger - the numbers are the same size, but the larger surrounding borders hide a greater amount of map information; the speed limit information has been ommitted - perhaps because of liability issues, the old 255WT was wrong about 10% of the time; the crisp graphics are replaced with more stylized perspective pictures - I guess to look newer, but they are less precise and .. sloppy looking; the trip computer now has a stupidly large round circle that does nothing but show the speed -at the expense of being able to display other trip data - which now has to be scrolled into view; the trip data has eliminated tenths of a mile, why??!!, it can no longer be used for precise distance measurement. I ended up returning the unit because I just couldn't justify buying something that was worse in so many ways than I already had. Purchased the extra holder to place on dashboard and that is a nice feature as it lays on the dashboard and when I park I can take it off and place on the floor. The Garmin is a very good GPS and the screen is very legible in sunlight. |

The only question I had was about the wall charger. I knew it wasn't a Garmin product so I was careful to inspect it before using it. The unit's label states it's a 5V cell phone charger (no current rating). Since the on-line product title/description says "... Rapid 12V Home..." I asked the seller (Eforcity, now Bargaincell?) if they had shipped me the right unit. They responded quickly (~10 hours), stating that the unit was correct. Meanwhile I did a little research. Yes, 5V is correct, however, a real Garmin charger will put out 1A vs (500 mA for this transformer). This difference, and some unique connector wiring keeps the unit from entering into the Computer/USB mode when plugged in. The Eforcity product features section states that the 1350T will cycle through the computer mode when first plugged in, but will restart in GPS mode in less than 10 seconds. That is true, my 1350T does exactly that. The Garmin support site states that charging through a computer USB port (also 5V, 500mA) will take a longer (8-12 hrs, vs 4-6 on either their AC charger or 12V Car charger). The Nuvi 1350T, will tell you the charging current if you power it up stand alone, then press and hold the "Battery Charge" icon on the main screen for about 8 seconds - then it will enter diagnostic mode, with one displayed parameters being the USB current (after you plug in the charger). Sure enough, the Eforcity charger is 500mA. Therefore, it will work, but not "Rapidly". Incidentally, I used my 1A Apple iPod transformer and a USB cable and while the 1350T did state that it was 1A, it still cycled (once) through the USB computer connection mode. The bottom line is: Eforcity sent me what I ordered promptly, and quickly responded to my e-mail inquiry. It was clear it wasn't a real Garmin transformer when I ordered it, but it was also inexpensive and does work as the product features description claims. The only thing misleading is the "Rapid 12V" in the product title, as it is neither 12V nor Rapid. I'm satisfied I got what I paid for. If you are bothered by the USB mode coming up when you use this (or any other cell phone charger), you should probably pay the extra and get a genuine Garmin AC wall charger. Assuming there is no fault in the device (keep in mind it's cheaply made, though not unusually so), I believe this transformer will work, though slowly, and will not damage your Nuvi (as it replicates standard USB port specs, maybe even slightly better as it's suppose to sense when the battery is full and automatically cut off charging, but I have not verified that). This product never worked I received this product, a portable travel rapid 12V Home Wall AC Charger never did work. I have tried it. The GPS bracket is included, so I don't need to remove the bracket from my other car when I move the GPS. It leaves no trace that would attract a thief who might break in to my car looking for a GPS in my glove compartment. It also looks like it would fit on top of the dashboard of any car I might rent while traveling. The tradeoff is that the heavy, bulky base is not conducive to packing in a carry-on bag. This friction mount, though smaller than the Garmin beanbag style, is still pretty massive. Also, it places the GPS higher above the dashboard than a windshield suction cup or a dashboard vent mount. The higher mounting location blocks a more important spot in my field of view. One of our two cars is a sporty model with a raked-back windshield. The friction mount doesn't fit on the dashboard because the top of the bracket bumps against the windshield. The bracket seems to be in place but lacks that "click" feeling when it's mated with the ball. Moreover, with the wiggle and twist motion need to get it mated, the ball looks chewed up. After using it on a drive-around, the bracket seems to hold so decided it's not worth the trouble to return; the bracket comes off easy when trying to make adjustment to the viewing angle. I wanted something sturdy to protect it from scratches and crushing, as sometimes things can get crushed in overhead bins when someone gets a bit overzealous in cramming their stuff in an already full bin. This item is listed as a hard case, so I thought I'd give it a try. I guess I couldn't have expected aluminum for the price at which this was offered, but it is a bit lightweight in terms of being a hard case. Without tearing the nylon covering off the material used, it feels as if it's a light weight plastic underneath. I rated the item a 4-star primarily for this reason. The phrase hard case just brings to mind something a little sturdier. Truth be told, it will probably do just fine in most cases for me and I don't anticipate it being a problem, as long as I'm mindful of this. I'll just have to keep in mind that it isn't sturdy enough to toss in a pile of bags, or to not pay attention when placing it into overhead bins or gate checking a backpack. Under those conditions, it could crush enough to contact the screen of the GPS unit and lead to damage, particularly if something with a sharp corner presses against it with a bit of pressure. I'll just have to keep it in mind and be careful... For the price, I'm pleased with what I received and would buy another if needed at this time. I wanted something sturdy to protect it from scratches and crushing, as sometimes things can get crushed in overhead bins when someone gets a bit overzealous in cramming their stuff in an already full bin. This item is listed as a hard case, so I thought I'd give it a try. I guess I couldn't have expected aluminum for the price at which this was offered, but it is a bit lightweight in terms of being a hard case. Without tearing the nylon covering off the material used, it feels as if it's a light weight plastic underneath. I rated the item a 4-star primarily for this reason. The phrase hard case just brings to mind something a little sturdier. Truth be told, it will probably do just fine in most cases for me and I don't anticipate it being a problem, as long as I'm mindful of this. I'll just have to keep in mind that it isn't sturdy enough to toss in a pile of bags, or to not pay attention when placing it into overhead bins or gate checking a backpack. Under those conditions, it could crush enough to contact the screen of the GPS unit and lead to damage, particularly if something with a sharp corner presses against it with a bit of pressure. I'll just have to keep it in mind and be careful... For the price, I'm pleased with what I received and would buy another if needed at this time. The maps are incredibly accurate, even for areas far from city centers. My only complaint is that the interface does not behave the same as it does when looking at the built-in maps of North America. Many cities, for example, do not appear until the map is zoomed-in on the region, and only then does the map for that area load and zooming out is again possible. Before I discovered this trick I was under the impression that very few metropolitan areas were covered. Only after zooming in to the neighborhood level did the right panel load, and it was possible to see the full layout of that country or region. The map also seems very recent. Some streets we did not expect to find were in fact on the map, so there is little to complain in this regard. I was also happy with the price. At least I couldn't get it to work. Plug it in and the GPS tells you to plug to a computer. The GPS end is used for computer hookup. It is working so far. So, no complaints. By the way, I realized afterward that the original Garmin Car charger could be fixed by changing the blown-out fuse, which costs less than $2 for a pack of 4! So, I changed the fuse and the old car charger is also working! So, now I have a backup car charger (this one) in my car always!
